Bird Studies
Hartley Nature Center keeps records of birds that come to the bird feeder & water garden area, and sends the data to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (U.S. & Canada Birdhouse, Feederwatch & eBird projects.)
We keep the information from sighting reports, monitoring bluebird/tree swallow houses around the building, and from NRRI graduate students in bird studies who do yearly breeding bird surveys in the park. We also gather winter bird information from the yearly local Audubon Christmas Bird Count. (See 2008 results here) Thank you to all the citizen science volunteers who helped us complete the 2008 count.
Our federally licensed bird-banding executive director, and our well-educated staff, are doing all we can to continue and expand on our bird studies and use the information in our classes. We hope the studies and classes will help to shape the stewardship of Hartley Park and the surrounding city for years to come.
