Hook, Line and Sinker
After mastering fishing equipment, skills and techniques, we will hit the water of Hartley Park in search of trout, sunfish and bass. Campers will explore the ponds and streams of Hartley by foot and by canoe. And once we have mastered Hartley, we will spend Friday at Wild Rice Lake in search of bigger fish.

Mountain Biking
Mountain bikers across Duluth already know what you get to learn- this park is awesome for biking! We'll learn safety and basic technique before hitting the designated bike trails, then get out there to experience the hills, valleys, bridges and puddles. Bring your helmet and bike*. Each day will also include nature study and team games. *All campers must bring their own bike and helmet each day of camp.

FORT 2
Exploring deeper in the woods of Hartley Park, searching for the perfect place, gathering natural materials, then plan it, build it, and use it. That's the idea of FORT 2. After looking at the building techniques of park residents like squirrels, beavers and foxes, we will come up with safe designs to build awesome forts with whatever materials we can find. This camp is open to everyone, even if they didn't attend a fort camp before.

How does a beaver build such an effective dam? Why do rivers move sideways? We will explore both of these questions and more as we dig into learning about water and how it changes the landscape. We will test our dam building skills, make a glacier, and create flood models to see the action first hand.

Fishin' Expedition
Having honed their basic fishing skills on-site, this full-day camp will go a-field, affording campers the opportunity to fish a few of the area's finest lakes and rivers. Highlights will include adventures on Wild Rice Lake and a two day, one night trip to a northern lake. Campers will experience setting up a fishing campsite, cooking over a fire and all skills needed to lead future expeditions.

Join us for a camp designed just for girls! We'll explore both the science and art sides of nature while learning new skills too. Together we'll spend our time hiking, undertaking science investigations, canoeing, creating art projects and venturing out on field trips to hike the Superior Hiking Trail, pick rocks along Lake Superior shore and more. We'll put our new skills to the test when we cook our own camp dinner, have a campfire and campout in Hartley's building Thursday night. Have you ever wondered what you would do if you had to stay outside overnight? This week we'll explore the basics of what it takes to be the next TV survivor superstar. After learning how to prepare for the worst, we'll move on to important skills like building a shelter, safely finding food and water and starting fires, all while keeping a positive, can-do attitude! Your new skills will be put to the test as we camp out Thursday night in Hartley's building. Campers will be ready for pickup at 9:00am on Friday morning.

Vrrrooooommmm! Rev up to learn the basics of solar power, then study acceleration, velocity and mechanical advantage as campers build their own solar car. Urban Wilderness Camp
Urban Wilderness Camp is Hartley Nature Center's traveling variety show. Each week of camp takes place at a different city park. Programming is designed to utilize the offerings of the featured location. Activities are designed to balance elements of recreation, education, conservation and community.We do things like swim in local creeks, search for crayfish, find agates, safely eat wild plants and berries, explore forests and creeks, play disc golf and capture the flag, make up games, paddle canoes, fish, cook over fires, tie knots, set up tarps, ride the city bus, hike on the Superior Hiking Trail, work and play as a team and take care of our local urban wilderness.

North Country Canoe Adventure
Explore the beauty of northern Minnesota by canoe departing Hartley on Monday to spend 5 days and 4 nights mastering a number of skills as we travel on waterways camping, fishing, cooking and exploring. In addition to canoe camping skills, students will learn about the native fauna and flora of the boreal forest, partake in water quality sampling and data collection, keep phenology journals, and even learn a little astronomy.
