(pronounced FREE-loofts-liv)
The Friluftslive Del Erickson Scholarship honors a lifelong belief that time spent outdoors shapes who we become. Rooted in Del’s Scandinavian heritage, “friluftslive”or “open-air life” reflects a deep commitment to curiosity, exploration, and connection to the natural world in every season.
For Del, childhood days spent in nature sparked a sense of wonder and discovery that stayed with him for life. He created this fund so others can experience that same joy of digging in the dirt, turning over rocks, and seeing the world with fresh eyes.
At Hartley Nature Center, that spirit comes to life every day. Yet too many families face financial barriers to participation, and current scholarship funding only covers about 20% of requests, not meeting the full need.
Your gift to the Friluftslive Scholarship helps change that. It opens access, creates opportunity, and ensures more children can build confidence, curiosity, and a lasting connection to the outdoors.
In honoring Del, you help carry his legacy forward and make space for the next generation to discover their own sense of wonder in nature.
